Magic

On this Earth, humans don’t just live with magic and its users; they embrace it. Magic is a well-known and frequently used force that can change physics, accomplish the impossible, and even change life itself. Magic can be used for everything, from the mundane everyday chores to the spectacular once-in-a-lifetime achievements, but only by a select few.

All magical species have a unique magic, but the spell system is universal. There are common, apprentice, master, and epic tier spells for every type of magic. All magic users can generally learn and practice their way up from common to master tier spells, but only the most talented and bold masters attempt epic spells. Epic spells are dangerous. They can be as powerful as a natural disaster and sometimes even defy natural laws.

Using a witchy example with combustion:

Common spell: light a candle

Apprentice spell: light a bonfire

Master spell: contain a house fire

Epic spell: sparking an explosion or creating fire in a vacuum

Paranormals

Firsts

The firsts are a group of three beings who are believed to be the creators of the universe, and as they created time, life, and death, they themselves are endless. The firsts are the first divine, the first witch, and the first skinshifter. From these three universal beings, all things, all magic, and all life came to be.

At one point, legend claims all three firsts roamed the world just as the divines used to, which remains a commonly held creation myth by most religions.

Divines

Divines had the power of creation magic. With each of their creations, so they too grew, but the greater the divine, the more magic they needed to survive. Some divines grew mightier than others, some wiser, some wilder, some harsher, and some kinder, but all were the same in one way: greedy. Divines always needed magic and more worship.

No one knows why, but the divines abandoned earth. No one knows when either. Many simply vanished, neglecting their civilizations and ignoring their temples. Not a single paranormal or human thought to question such divine whims until the fifth century when one divine announced his permanent departure, with no final decree to his priests, no final command to his troops, nor final farewell to his chosen queen. The last recorded divine interaction occurred in the fifteenth century.

Witches

Witches have the power of natural magic. They are the sowers of seeds and seekers of starlight, and everywhere they pass, anything green, anything that breathes, anything that lives, will grow big and beautiful.

Skinshifters

Skinshifters have the power of illusion magic. They are the masters of the mask and makers of mischief, and everywhere they wander, nothing is what it seems, and everything is what it is not.

Vampires

Vampires have the power of blood magic. Created at the whim of a divine who was bemused by a witch’s touch, vampires are the twisted product of fascination skewed by irresponsible power. Vampires were created somewhere in the Caucasus mountains around 400 CE.

Sirens

Sirens have the power of summoning magic. Legend has it that sirens and goblins are the end-products of a powerful divines’s creative ambitions gone so horribly wrong, that the creature was permanently split into two different beings. Sirens and goblins are said to have been created somewhere along the Nile river around 1600 BCE.

Goblins

Goblins have the power of crafting magic. Legend has it that goblins and sirens are the end-products of a powerful divines’s creative ambitions gone so horribly wrong, that the creature was permanently split into two different beings. Goblins and sirens are said to have been created somewhere along the Nile river around 1600 BCE.

Seers

Seers have the power of foresight magic. Over 20,000 years ago, on an island that is now far beneath water, a divine desired the power held by the Fates. That divine created what they could not have. For a very long time, for every divine, there was a seer bound to them, but now, no more will ever be made. The seers who still live are free in the modern world, wherever they can coexist with humans who tolerate their erratic outbursts and unwanted predictions.

Hybrids

Hybrids are born when a divine reproduces with another paranormal or human to create magical offspring. Creation magic lingers in their veins. A hybrid born to a human, though, is not innately magical and cannot use that lingering creation magic.

A hybrid born to another paranormal is another matter. That hybrid would have the same magic type as their paranormal parent as well and could tap into that lingering creation magic, but at a fraction of the power a true divine would hold. Since divines have abandoned the world, the only hybrids left are those whose creation magic is so strong that they enjoy nearly immortal lives.
