The Art Part

From Anarlie’s first pieces of Sialuk and her bear skin to Mibl’s new cover designs, I’ve shared so much with you about my cover art journey already, so it may seem surprising that I could have more to say.

That’s just it, though. I’ve certainly shown off my covers and spoken about my artists, inspirations, expectations, timelines, outcomes… all the “things” about the art journey that I can quantify in laborious hours and exchanged emails.

As with most content creation, though, it’s one thing seeing the final product and feeling proud.

It’s another experience entirely to see my books next to one another, actually looking like they all belong to the same series, actually reading my name in bold print, actually seeing the story I created in full.

And I love it. I am head-over-heels obsessed with this feeling.

Each time Mibl delivered a new cover to me, I felt this immense joy building and building. Still, I was taken by surprise by the first time I really looked at all my books together. Truly as one story.

Perhaps the best way to describe it is when Blood Song and Spirit Song got their first ever professional covers, I felt so happy that I could finally deliver those stories in the pretty packaging that they always deserved.

Seeing the series in its full glory, though, takes my bliss to new selfish levels. I’m not just ecstatic to present my stories in the best possible look; I feel like I myself have been dressed up to the nines.

Silly, but it’s true.

The art journey did so much more than dress my books in appealing, genre-appropriate covers. It gave me a look that I’ve been dreaming I could pull off, not just because my stories and I deserve it, but because I’ve earned it, through labor, learning, and love.

The end looks good on me, and I couldn’t be more pleased to see it.
